Eternal by Cynthia Leitich Smith

Zachary is a guardian angel who is protecting Miranda, an average teenager growing up in Dallas. He knows that something bad is going to happen to Miranda, but he is not quite sure. Miranda had originally made plans with her best friend Lucy to spend the night before Valentine's Day as a movie night, but when her friend gets a chance to go out with the hot guy from the video store she has been crushing on, all plans go out the window.

The guy has Lucy meet him at a local cemetery, and Lucy wants Miranda to come along. They arrive and things immediately seem wrong, but when Zachary steps in to try to protect Miranda he does the undo-able. He reveals his true nature. This action costs him both his wings and his powers, and Miranda ends up disappearing.

Miranda finds herself being whisked away to Chicago, where she is turned into a vampire and takes on the role of princess and daughter to the current Dracula, or ruler of vampires. The vampires themselves have taken on the moniker of Eternals and despise the term vampire. Miranda is being trained to be the heir of her new father.

Zachary finds himself roaming the streets until another guardian angel appears, telling him that he could win back his status as an angel if he heads to Chicago to complete a mission for the forces of good. He is only given an address and some money to get there.

Upon arriving, Zachary finds himself brought in to interview with Miranda as her Personal Assistant. He recognizes her and is horrified by what has happened. He decides that he is going to do what he can to try and save her soul and bring her back from the primal urges that are part of her new status as an eternal.

Leitich Smith has done an incredible job of creating a mythos that involves vampire, weres, and angels. This is in fact the second book set in this universe, though it is not actually a sequel. I have definitely already set out to get the first book, which is called Tantalize

Miranda and Zachary are truly interesting characters. While they are partially defined by their status as supernatural beings, but they are also filled with the self-doubt and raw emotions that are in all of us. They perfectly capture the voice of a teenager.

The book is also written so the chapters are written in each of their perspectives. This provides a great deal of insight into who they are and how they each see the world and the people around them (including each other) differently.

The writing style also seemed to have a bit of Anne Rice in it. I am not sure that it was intentional, but Leitich Smith has been able to capture the richly detailed writing style of the former-Mistress of Vampires. This really is a must read for fans of vampires and angels!
