Sixteen-year-old Sabine "Bean" is at a tunring point in her life. The world is in trouble, she has really started to notice how bad things are getting. As a result, she has started a blog in which she explores the environmental troubles the world is facing and uses research to try to show people what can be done to make things better.
A major turning point occurs one afternoon when she is riding her bike. A woman in an SUV chucks a chicken nugget out of her window, and it ends up hitting her. It leads to a verbal argument, and a friend posts it video of it to YouTube. Before she knows it, she finds herself shifting from her current croup of friends to a new group, which is made up of eco-warriors.
In fact, she ends up falling for one of the guys in the group who has dubbed himself Vray Foret. As time goes by, she finds herself shifting from being happy to share information about the dire ecological straights to possibly committing ecoterrorism. It really becomes a question of whether the ends justifies the means.
I am sort of torn about this book. I think the message is a great one, and their is no question that it is well written and research. The links that Bean provides via her blog are real and are full of great information.
At the same time, it irks me that Bean's individuality is subsumed by her feelings for Vray. I had not doubt that she is an environmentalist, but I sometimes felt that she was deferring herself to Vray, which bothered me a lot because I don't think girls should do that. I just found it so because I wanted to tell her that she doesn't have to make the decisions based on what her boyfriend wants.
It is definitely worth a read, though.
