The eighth volume starring Sookie Stackhouse, mindreader and waitress extraodinaire, just came out this month. Harris spares no coverage of the supernatural as witches, weres, fae, and vampires all have moments starring them at some point in the story which includes a hostile take-over, a civil war, an expanded family, another roommate, and more romantic confusion for our heroine. Sookie still has her spunky outlook on the world which kept this reader smiling from time to time.
The book was a good one, but it would have been better if it had been structured as a series of short stories because that is really what the book is. Perhaps, Harris has gotten used to editing short story collections rather than novels since that has been her focus recently. While this is not a bad thing since the reader is still entertained, it does mean that there does not seem to be one underlying plot. Instead there are a series of subplots that don't necessarily have the best of segues between them.
The book definitely allows for Harris to clean-up some of her hanging subplots and setup what will clearly be seen in the next novel. Readers definitely get a chance to see more of the details relating to plot points that have only been hinting at such as her touch of fae blood and why she has a fairy godmother and what is going to happen to her roommate's boyfriend-turned-cat.
Fans of the series will defintiely like this one, but newcomers will probably be completely lost. These books are definitely not classics, but they are loads of fun, which explains their popularity.
