Dead over Heels by Charlaine Harris

Two years have past since the previous book in the series (The Julius House), and Aurora Teagarden and her husband Martin have settled into their life together. Gone is the mysterious dealings that helped make Martin a successful businessman. Instead, he is focusing on a more traditional career choice with his wife in Lawrenceton, Georgia.

Living in an apartment above their garage is Angel Youngblood and her husband Shelby. They were originally hired as bodyguards because of Martin's shady dealings, but they have settled down into just being helpers around the house. Roe and Angel are enjoying a relaxing afternoon while cutting the lawn when they receive an unexpected visitor. As a small plane is flying overhead, it deposits the body of Sergeant Jack Burns, a detective for the local police department with whom Roe has a less then friendly relationship.

Knowing Roe's interest in true crime as well as her past history into helping out with local murders, it will probably not surprise the reader to find her diving in to see if she can help get to the root of the problem, particularly when the body landed in her yard.

Of course doing so means finding the time to do a proper investigation. Roe has now returned to working part time at the local public library. She is currently running the children's department since the librarian is on maternity leave. She has a true love of books and also seems like a natural with the kids.

The list of investigators gets longer when a pair of FBI agents arrive. They have been called into the case because it is suspected that the sergeants murder may be tied to the fact that a resident in town is in the Witness Protection Program, and he likely know who the person really was.

Things become even more complicated as more citizens in town are attacked, though (thankfully) most are not actually killed. The question is whether Roe and the others can sort out who the assailant is before she, or someone near her, becomes the next target.

As with the earlier books in the series, this volume is full of interesting characters in a quaint southern town. While set in the south, the series always makes me think of Jessica Fletcher and her small Maine town in the Murder She Wrote television show. Everyone is quirky and has a surprisingly dark and mysterious past. Of course, that is what makes every cozy mystery interesting. There is no shortage of red herrings in this tale as Roe gets closer and closer to the murderer.

I do have to say that I really can't stand Martin. I feel like he is a controlling man, and it bothers me that Roe almost seems to subsume her own needs and wants for his even as she praises him for allowing her to make her own choices. I really wish they would bring back the really nice writer she was interested in from the first two books. Martin can just get out.
