Joss Whedon takes an opportunity to merge his popular vampire slayer show with the futuristic graphic novel he wrote a few years ago with Fray. This is the fourth volume (or episode) in the eighth season, though it is only in comic form, of Whedon's show Buffy the Vampire Slayer. In a bizarre mix-up involving magical time travel, Buffy is thrown forward into he future where she finds herself working with the slayer Fray, who is trying to stand alone as against the vampires with only her police officer sister and mutant brother.
As Buffy is missing in the future, Xander is dealing with the newest mutation of Buffy's sister Dawn. The good news is that she is no longer a giant, but now she is a centaur. While Willow focuses on trying to bring Buffy back safely, Xander and Willow are left to lead the fight when their base, a Scottish Castle, is bombarded with magical ordinance.
The twist of the story is that the effects of the here and now are totally affecting the future, and viewers will get to see the death of one of the main characters in a most surprising way.
The illustrator in this volume, and throughout the series has done a wonderful job of capturing the visages and feel of the characters and the setting of the popular show. What is even more impressive is that the storylines and humor are also just as rich.
This is a must read for Buffy fans, but only if you have read the first three volumes.
