Blessed by Cynthia Leitich Smith

Readers are reunited with Quincie P. Morrise, the narrator of Tantalize. Things have not gotten any easier for her since we last visited. In the previous book, she became the proud owner of Sanguini's a vampire-themed restaurant after her parent's death. She ran the restaurant with her uncle and the help of a very dedicated staff, but things proved to be quite interesting when Brad, the chef she hired to play the role of vampire entertainer, proved to not only have a taste for blood, but a strong desire to woo her and take over the world. With the help of her best friend Kieren, who is also a half-werewolf, she was able to find some resolution to the situation.

Unfortunately, that solution was not the end of the story. In the process of dealing with Brad, Quincie had been partially brought over, and is also now undead. While she seems able to stay away from human blood and survive on collected animal blood, her soul is definitely in danger. Also, during the book grand reopening of Sanguini's Brad had been able to sneak some of his own blood into one of the Gothic-themed desserts, which means 100s of people from all over the country, and even a few tourists from outside are on the verge of becoming vampire followers of Brad.

To make matters worth, Kieren is being sent of to were-camp because he is having trouble with the transition from human to werewolf. He can't actually finish the transition, and he doesn't have control of when the change starts to happen, which endangers the secret of all weres if humans start to notice.

Fortunately for Quincie, there are a new group of allies coming to town just in time. Zach, the former failed guardian angel who got his wings back in Eternal has been assigned to help her out. While his experience helping the newly undead is not the best, the hope is that he can help Quincie stem Brad's plan before other victims fall to him.

To make matters worse, the situation with Brad seems to get even worse when it becomes clear that he might provide the conduit for the original Dracula to return. Quincie and her allies, old and new, are going to have to work together in the hopes of repeating history ... and doing it better. It turns out that the events in Bram Stoker's Dracula are not only true, but Quincie is the great niece of the Texan of the same name from the book. Could Stoker's classic novel of horror hold the secret to putting an end to both Brad and Dracula ... permanently? And in the process, could Quincie's soul be saved?

This is a strong sequel to both Tantalize and Eternal. Familiar characters and setting return, allowing two really interesting casts to intermingle and tie up loose ends from both works. I really enjoyed getting back into this world that seems like a junior version of Charlaine Harris' Sookie Stackhouse series. Humor, action and suspense are mixed together nicely to keep the reader turning the pages.

I did think that this volume was a little bit distracted at points, making the book feel a little longer than it had to be, but I really couldn't tell you where the author could have taken out contact since everything does come together in the end. She has nicely woven Bram Stoker's lore into her world, and I really like the fact that, unlike Twilight readers are presented with a female protagonist surrounded by the supernatural while remaining a strong and independent character. She made a clear choice between her vampire (Brad) and were (Kieren) and does not allow the difficult results from keeping her down.

This, and the two preceding books, are must reads for fans of the supernatural.

Werewolves and vampires are all the rage these days. Must be because of the Twilight series.
