Joss Whedon has done quite well with the eighth season of Buffy as a comic, and now he is exploring the next season of Angel. At the conclusion of the series, Angel and his friends were left with all of Los Angeles being taken over by the forces of Hell. Demons and monsters have divided the city into wards, with a single warlord in charge of each sector.
Angel is no longer a vampire while Gunn has become one. Wesley is the spiritual connection to the senior partners at Wolfram & Hart. Connor is leading a small army, and Spike has settled down with his own set of warriors as he serves a crazed version of an old friend. Lorne, everyone's favorite crooning demon, has found a small bit of happiness in the city.
They are all on a path that will lead to a major battle to see whether Hell will continue to rule in the City of Angels or whether the righteous shall save the day.
I think Whedon's team has done an even better job of capturing the strengths of the show and its characters than has been done with the Buffy comics. I couldn't wait to pick up the next volume.
