5th Horseman by James Patterson & Maxine Paetro

Lindsay Boxer's life seems to be filled with the unsure. Her relationship with Joe, the assistant Secretary of Home Security, is reaching a new level of feelings, but she is not sure it can survive the cross-country relationship with him in Waschington,D.C., and her in San Francisco.

She is also finally settling into being in charge of Homicide at the police department. She was thrilled with the promotion, but she really misses being able to be right on the street doing the investigations herself. The high profile cases in the city allow her to keep at least one foot in the casefiles.

The first mystery in the book involves a series of girls who are dudded up to the nines and posed in high-end cars throughout the city to be found by unsuspecting residents. The women are meticulously cleaned before they are dressed in very expensive clothes and shoes. The only clue her department is able to find is a unique perfume that is used on the victims.

The newest member of the murder club, Yuki, is drawn right into the center of the other series of murders in the book. After her mother Keiko has a mini-stroke, she finds herself into the hospital. While it is a well-respected hospital, it is currently being sued for malpractice after a number of patients have been identified as having died from what seemed to be minor injuries/illnesses. Overdosed or misprescribed drugs are at the root. Yuki is drawn right into the specifics of the case, even considering taking her mother to another hospital after hearing the details. Her mother convinces her otherwise.

Unfortunately, that proves to be a mistake when Keiko also dies under suspicious circumstances. Before long, the pieces start to fall into place, and Lindsay and the girls figure out that many of the victims of these mysterious deaths end up with coins placed over their eyes. The question is whether their prime suspect is being set up, or is he the heartless physician he seems to be.

The storyline is good, though, I think the hospital deaths are given much more of the limelight. I would have liked to see a little more in-depth coverage of the car-girls. That aspect of the story seemed a bit rushed and the capturing of those responsible was a bit anti-climactic as a result.

This is another fine addition to the series, though.
