Broken Hill is located near the border with South Australia It is 220 m (722 ft) above sea level, has an average rainfall of 235 mm (9 in) and summer temperatures that reach well over 40 °C (104 °F). The closest major city is Adelaide, the capital of South Australia, which is more than 500 km (311 mi) to the southwest.
The town was founded in the 1880s after lead and zinc was found there and is still operating though tourism is the main drawcard today, back then the dust storms nearly closed the town down until some bright spark came up with the idea of planting trees right around the town to act as a buffer .
After planting millions of trees over time it worked , sure dust storms still hit the place but greatly reduced in both wind and dust
While you people over there are getting snow and freezing weather its our luck to have these dust storms each year in our northern arid areas, even here in Adelaide we get them occasionally but no where near the same
Pt Augusta where I built a house unknowingly pointing north, after the dust had settled from the strong north wind the wife complained about the dust inside the house , I told her to open both front and back doors, wait for a south wind and it would blow out the front again, she didn't think it was funny for some reason.

Scary about the dust storms though. So little control over that...
