Terminology Use of Words-- in Aussie

U S A uses the word RANCHER when mentioning farmer and ranch for the holding
AUSTRALIA uses cattle station and station owner in that context -also a Farmer -- i e --wheat and wool-mixed etc is known as a COCKY
His residence is just called a farm house and the owner of such is a BOSS COCKY .
In this picture you can see the Boss Cocky , he's the one just sitting with his pipe doing nothing but making sure his sheep are being shorn
The shearers shown are busy working away the one standing on the right hand side would be sharpening his shears.
the shearer who shears the most sheep in a day is called --THE RINGER

Did you ever see the movie "The Sundowners" with Robert Mitchum and Deborah Kerr??/ Filmed in Australia it is about a man who is a shearer--excellent.

Here in Ohio I have never met a farmer who will say that he ever made a dollar profit even once in his life. Such liars drive Cadillacs and Mercedes, too.

same the world over mate with farmers -----though it used to be ---if the cockys going bad the country is also ---now the price of wool is so low we depend on mining

Farmers have fields of crops that they plow and plant and harvest, and their holding is called a farm. Ranchers have expanses of untilled land where cows and sheep etc roam and graze and that holding is a ranch.

agree --that's what you call them--- but cockys or cockies (same thing only different

) is what we call farmers , boss cockies are the actual owners ---confusion reigns
