Martin has noted that in my personal blogs i usually mention pubs, (hotels)- years back , I don't know about now because I am not a regular at any of them, if you wanted any local info the pub was the place to ask especially in country areas .
Closing time Monday till Saturday was 6 pm, the 6pm cut off time became known as the 6 o clock swill, you would line up an extra drink or two before the publican called time gents please, then the barmen stopped serving .
Ten pm closing came in 1967, then Sunday trading in the mid eights, before Sunday was allowed many hotels had social clubs where wives and children would attend for a day out , needless to say booze was present, these outings allowed anyone to pay for drink, the profits going towards a Xmas
tree outing , presents for all members children and sporting equipment.
When I returned to Adelaide in 1975 and settled in one thing I wanted was a friendly pub with a social club, tried those where I had grown up without success , then another called The Land of Promise , the first night I joined in a conversation had a couple of pints and left to go home , the next night when I walked in the barman placed a pint in front of me without asking then asked if I would like to join the social club , that waterhole became my favourite for 20 years until I moved 30kms away and stopped working.
That social club was more family family friendly only cost 50 dollars a year membership fees with Friday night being club night at the pub with the usual things raffles , spin the wheel and selling beer tickets. Each month there was free outing , buses laid on food and lots of games for the kids , drinks were free, ice cream and soft drinks for kiddies . Had some great times over the years and made many friends
A few outings we hired the whole pleasure cruiser for a day with 3 buses being filled , the one that operated on the river was good we had a band play with dancing and a free hot lunch for all , the most noticeable trip was when we left pt adelaide and cruised along the coast line all day , we had a sick berth for the ones who got sea sick and it was a calm sea. No more of that one for sure.
Another day at the pub which had a large hall , LES GIRLS put on a show.
