What is happening to college football irks me.
Brian Kelly, 'former' coach of the Cincinnati Bearcats, coached the team to a 12-0 season and got a BCS bowl bid. The team will play Florida, defending national champions, in January.
Brian Kelly signed a contract for 5 million dollars a year to quit the Cinci job and go to Notre Dame. He did this knowing that his former team still had a BIG game to play, that BCS bowl game. The team will be coached for the bowl appearance by an assistant coach.
Notre Dame used to be a football powerhouse. The coaching job there is considered one of the prime jobs in collegiate sports. I can't blame Kelly for accepting the job.
But I can blame him for poor sportsmanship and lack of class.
Brian Kelly could have told Notre Dame to hold off on the announcement and contract until he took his team to the Florida game. If Notre Dame wanted him that bad, they would have agreed to keep it hushed.
But, the Kelly-Notre Dame deal was spread all over the news yesterday, and the Cinci players were very, very upset.
I have no love for Notre Dame. I have even less regard now for Brian Kelly. But I do have some love and regard for student athletes who go undefeated in a season and earn their first ever BCS bowl bid against the reigning national champs.
I wish the team good fortune and hope they upset the Gators.
I could care less for a coach who abandons his principles for cash and a spotlight job.
GO CATS!
Screw you, Brian Kelly.
