I am a non-frequent movie-goer. I hate sitting in the dark by myself with little to do but regret blowing ten bucks plus an extra five on bad popcorn. But I have a small list of my favorites, in no particular order.
Dr. Zhivago (I believe is the best motion picture ever made. A David Lean Film. His pics are always blockbuster epics.)
War and Peace. The Russian Soviet-era one. Hard to beat for spectacle. Probably the most expensive picture ever made. Subtitles were clumsy but the show was great. 6 hours long.
Titanic. Gripping, awful sophomoric acting, but nonetheless an incredible film.
Band of Brothers. The ten-section series made for HBO by Spielberg, Tom Hanks et al. Get the DVDs. It is worth a viewing, even if war sickens you. Based on real men and real history. It follows Easy Company of a 101st Airborne Division battalion from training to after VE Day. Human. Cameos of the actual guys who were portrayed by the actors. I believe this is the best film ever shot. True story.
Battleground. Another great war movie, made after the Second World War. It is about (again) a unit in the 101st. Best actors ever assembled for a mostly war motion picture. True story.
Sideways. My favorite low-budget flick, and won the Academy Award! "I ain't drinkin' no f**king Merlot!" LOL
Citizen Kane. Needs no liner notes. The best. I named a cat Rosebud.
Pinocchio. Ah. What a tale! What an era that produced such wonderful animation!
Brazil. If you never saw this farce, this well-done absurdist comedy, you have not seen the best. I am the proud owner of the DVD. Every time I watch it I see something new and hilarious that I missed before.
Alien. The first one. Scariest movie I ever saw. Skip all the later 'Alien' movies. They don't measure up to the original one.
Schindler's List. I still get tears in my eyes just thinking about it. If you ever visit Jerusalem, place a stone on his tomb for me. Great movie. Another Spielberg masterpiece.
There are more, but this is enough.
