Castel di San Gimignano is a hill town a few kilometers SW of Florence, Italy. In the Middle Ages the prosperous wine-growing burgers of the small town raised towers above their houses and palaces for defense. A competition arose when the wealthy neighbors tried to out-do the height of the other families' structures. The town is known for its Vernaccia di San Gimignano, a superb Tuscan white wine. San Gimignano is a popular tourist destination.
