Not to besmirch the Government, for all it does for us, and not to slam the USPS, because as we all know neither fog, sleet, snow or rain will deter them from getting to our mailboxes, porches and door slots...

but for the first time ever my SS check arrived a day late.

That is not supposed to happen.

Here's what I think happened:

Nobody on my block got any mail yesterday. That's because the USPS is short-handed here and when one carrier is sick with the H1N1 (which is now rampant here!), then they have to lay that person's route onto several other carriers. Maybe they all got sick?

So I have to go deposit it and take some cash back because I forgot to go to Kroger yesterday. I need cat food and litter again, and I discovered that my flour cannister has a bottom.

It is raining again. The farmers can't pick the corn or the mud will bog the machines and the corn will be wet in the trailers, trucks and bins... which will spoil it. Also, only about 70 percent of the ripe soybean crop is in the pipeline. It can't be cut while wet, either.

So it is going to be a late harvest here. The forecast is for rain on just about every day until the first of next week. We expect frost tonight, too. It is very cold so early.

I think I will run out to Riehm's Farm today and see if they have decent Roma tomatoes still for sale. I may make another chili sauce batch, while I feel energetic.

After the frost there won't be any more fruit on the tomato vines.
