Adventures in Amish Country Ohio ...

My uncle and aunt picked me up just after 8:00 am and we departed in the Ford SUV for Holmes County, about 90 miles southeast of Tiffin. I took two cameras but the day was mostly overcast and offered few really good opportunities for landscape shots.

The scenery was great, as the color is beginning to appear.

We stopped at several antique and souvenir shops, beginning with the Pine Tree Barn near Wooster. My aunt spent two hours roaming and making purchases. It drove my uncle nuts, and he managed to get her out of the place with only about $280 of bagged merchandise!

At one of the midday stops I saw this Amish buggy and horse. Most of their horses are well-trained and disciplined. You can see the Amish fellow crossing the street with a can of gasoline. He was doing a good deed for a tourist out in the country who had run out of gas.

I marveled at his horse and we talked for a short time. These horses are sought-after for the racing trade as trotters and pacers. His gelding is a five-year old and named "Hiram."

The Coblentz Chocolate Factory is one of the many tourist spots in Berlin (BER-lin), OH. Every shop has the young girls who serve you dressed in Amish clothing with the white caps completely covering their hair. Most of the girls are NOT Amish. The Amish young-ones are at home, doing their family work.

This lone horse posed for me out along a country lane.

I did find a bunny for the boys. It is life-size and plush, and I let them see it when I got home. Doobie tried to claim it and bit it on the ears.

But I got the bunny by request from Hobbie, who really likes it! Satchel (gray) looks on and tries to keep Doobie at bay.

Ohio has about 56,000 Amish residents, an increase of 60 percent since 1992.(from Wikipedia)

We had a great lunch in a giant family-style restaurant named "Der Dutchman," in Walnut Creek. I can't describe how good it was, and we all left food on our finished plates. The place has two large rooms with seating for over 200 in each. Beautiful views out the solid walls of windows.

If you ever plan on visiting Ohio, you must drive through its rolling Amish Country hills in Holmes and Tuscarawas Counties, south and slightly west of Akron and Canton.
