Stresand Gala Raises $9 Million for Obama

Hollywood stars came out in force as Barbra Streisand hosted a gala that raised more than $9 million for Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama Tuesday night.

Several hundred guests forked over $28,500 each to attend a dinner and reception in Beverly Hills and hear Streisand sing four songs, including “Make Someone Happy,” Fox News reported.

A later event cost attendees $7,500 each.

Streisand’s audience included Steven Spielberg and his Dreamworks partners Jeffrey Katzenberg and David Geffen, Leonardo DiCaprio, Will Ferrell, Jodie Foster, Jamie Lee Curtis and Chris Rock.

Obama told the well-heeled gathering: "If we can cut through the nonsense and the lipstick and the pigs and the silliness, then I'm absolutely convinced that we're going to win.”

Streisand is not the only Hollywood player to come out strong for Obama. George Clooney hosted an event in Geneva, Switzerland, on Sept. 2, when nearly 200 attendees — all U.S. citizens — paid $1,000 apiece to hear Clooney praise Obama. He also hosted a private dinner with 75 Obama backers who have raised $10,000 for the Democrat.

Clooney called Obama a “rock star” when he endorsed him last year.

There is even talk that the rock group The Grateful Dead are planning to reassemble to perform a concert for the Obama campaign.

Obama has now raised $440 million, more than any presidential candidate in history, including a record $66 million in August, according to The Washington Post.

He is also the first presidential nominee to eschew public funding for the general election. His Republican opponent John McCain has received $84 million from the federal government.

At a campaign stop in Ohio, McCain has this to say about Obama and the Beverly Hills fundraiser:

“He talked about siding with the people… just before he flew off to Hollywood for a fundraiser with Barbra Streisand and his celebrity friends. Let me tell you, my friends, there is no place I’d rather be than here, with the working men and women of Ohio.”
