Edward Alan Butler and Leslie Earl Schoof were joined in civil union on Saturday in Conway, N.H. The Rev. Mary Edes, a Unitarian Universalist minister, officiated at Salyards Center for the Arts.

Mr. Butler (above, left), 58, and Mr. Schoof, 56, own the Notchland Inn in Hart's Location, N.H.
Mr. Butler is also a Democratic member of the New Hampshire House of Representatives and the chairman of the Planning Board of Hart's Location. He graduated from Boston University and received a master's degree in nursing from New York University.
He is a son of the late Josephine V. Butler and the late James E. Butler, who lived in Newport, N.Y., and is a stepson of Shirley Butler Casadonte, also of Newport.
Mr. Schoof was the general manager of the American Ballet Theater in New York from 1986 to 1993. He is the town moderator, presiding over town meetings in Hart's Location and is on the board of the Conway Area Humane Society. He graduated from Purdue.
He is a son of Kenneth W. Schoof of Hamlet, Ind., and the late Augusta K. Schoof.
Mr. Butler and Mr. Schoof met in 1974 and have been a couple for 30 years.
