Jumbo

I never knew this! I always thought 'jumbo' was a 'toy' elephant! I checked it out after watching Steven Fry's programme 'Q.I.'

Jumbo

Jumbo (1861 – September 15, 1885) was a large African Bush Elephant, born 1861 in the French Sudan – present-day Mali – imported to a Paris zoo, transferred to the London Zoo in 1865, and sold in 1882 to P. T. Barnum, for the circus. The giant elephant's name has spawned the common word "jumbo", meaning large in size. Jumbo was born in 1861 in the French Sudan, whence he was imported to France and kept in the old zoo Jardin des Plantes, near the railway station Gare d'Austerlitz in Paris. It's a crime Jumbo was put on public display, but at least millions got a chance to see him. Interesting.

I heard about it on 'Q.I.' It was sad how he was treated. I never knew that he 'actually existed' - I really thought it was just a name to associate 'Elephants with'. On 'Wiki', there was a small black & white' photo of him, but 'mybloggers' was playing up last night, so it did not post. I have seen elephants many many times in Zoos, but 'Jumbo', was massive!
