Bonnie Prince Charlie, on This Day in 1745

Today in 1745 Prince Charles Edward Stewart and the Jacobite Army began their retreat from Derby.
After a decisive victory in the '45 campaign at the Battle of Prestonpans, "Bonnie Prince Charlie" reached Derby on the 4th December. With the Jacobites' arrival only 150 miles north of London, there was widespread panic. However, with the promised French and Spanish invasion of England conspicously absent and with limited support from the English Jacobites, a reluctant Charles was forced to heed his advisers and withdraw from Derby only two days later.

Such a pretty song, very wistful sounding. Is it pronounced 'darby' with an 'a'?
comment by troutbend on Dec 5, 2010 6:35 PM ()
Yes, it is spelled with an E, but pronounced 'Dar' English is an amazingly awkward language to learn
I remember learning this song in the 'infants' I always thought it was a true account of the event, but it turns out that Bonnie Prince Charlie, returned to France, where, due to his parents exile, he had been born.
I am currently trying to learn more about Scotland - I know so little of it's history (apart from the standard Battle dates etc.). It is very interesting to be honest. The Scottish had an extremely hard, cruel time of things.
