Chevron to Face New Fine

Posted by Zhanna_Zhukova | in Environment, Economy
AFP reports that Kazakhstan’s government threatens U.S. oil major Chevron with a fine equivalent to $309 million for alleged environmental violations. This is not the first time an oil company faces environmental fines - and it’s not the first time for Chevron either. Although in most cases these charges do have enough grounds, sometimes ecology-wise claims are imposed as a pressure tool to sway the foreigners, like in the case of Agip and Kashagan.
Kazakh Environment Minister Nurlan Iskakov said in a report an administrative fine of T37 billion could be imposed on the U.S. energy giant that controls 50% of TengizChevroil which is developing the Tengiz oil field in the west of Kazakhstan.
