Cheap Firewood and Fall

When I had two trees cut down, one of my neighbors expressed an interest in buying the wood from me. He has a fireplace and I do not, although I always wanted one. He borrowed a splitter and a small trailer from friends. He spent three days splitting the logs and loading them on the trailer for the trip to his house three houses up the street. Now my yard is empty and his is full of wood. He said there is enough wood to last for five years (after aging for one year). I am so glad his family could use the wood. Otherwise the tree cutters would have just shredded it for mulch. And I saved some money too, not having to pay for the taking away of the trees.
He got the wood moved just in time. We have not had rain for ten days and now it is raining. Fall is here. I have caught three mice in three days in my crawl space. I keep the mousetrap companies in business in the fall. I don't mind setting traps, but I throw them away with their little bodies. I don't reuse them. Ick. One of my previous cats was a mouser. My current cat is not.

It was a good deal for both of you, money aside. Did that silver maple produce a lot of suckers? At one of our previous homes we had a tree my mother said was a silver maple, and all kinds of suckers grew up from the roots. I have a feeling it was a silver something else.

This happened to me recently. As I jogged past a guy sawing up a fallen tree, I stopped to ask if he burned wood. He said no--he was just going to have a big bonfire. Whoa! I offered to finish the job and take the wood. He gladly accepted. Hard maple burns hot!

One of my trees was a 40 year old silver maple; the other was a 40 year old mulberry. Both are good for firewood, I was told. Both had long lives for "junk trees".

He borrowed the splitter and the trailer from friends. He is a fireman and has connections. He offered me money for the trees which I took. Not as much as it would have cost him to buy the wood, but he had to do the splitting, which I could not have done, if I wanted to sell the wood myself. So we are all happy.

Did he offer you any money??? Even with renting the equipment he saved a lot of money. I know he saved you the trouble of having the 2 trees removed but still---. Oh well you are a good neighbor.
