Best Thing

One of the best things about retirement is that I can do whatever I want, whenever I want. I really enjoy sitting on my front porch reading during the day. Last summer I read all of Jane Austen. I had never read her before. Hard to believe since I started out as an English major. Then I watched all the Masterpiece Theater Jane Austens. Then all the Jane Austen videos. Then the Jane Austen Book Club movie. I became a Jane-ite. I was hooked. What is your favorite thing to do after retirement?

Retirement and "empty nest" all happened simultaneously. I began to travel and play more golf. And read more!!!!!!!!! I play more piano, too.

My empty nest filled up again last year-daughter and two grandsons moved home. My piano playing is in fits and starts. I will play for a week or so; then not play for a few months. I took lessons as a child and again when I was in my late 30s only for my own enjoyment.

I have LOVED every day of retirement!!! Only problem is I find myself so busy I can't get everything done!!!

By the way I am a big JA fan--have belonged to The Jane Austen Society for years!

I did not know about the Society. It turns out that there is a Greater Chicago Chapter which has had some events near me. Thanks for the info.

There is probably a Jane Austen Tour of Britain, I think you have done as much of a tour as possible without leaving home. When I retired I decided I was going to watch all the movies I've missed, especially those nominated for Academy Awards, so I signed up for Netflix and have made a dent in my want list. Right now, I'm reading all of Agatha Christie's books, but neither one of these is my favorite thing to do in retirement - that honor goes to getting up when I feel like it in the morning.

My friend Gene, who was Secretary of the Jane Austen Society took two tours of Jane Austen 'country' in charge of the whole trip--in fact she wrote a book about the humor/wit of Jane!

On my wish list was to stay up late at night and sleep late in the morning. Unfortunately, no matter how late I stay up, I wake up before 7, earlier than when I was working. Then my resistance gets low from lack of sleep and I get sick. So I am back to going to bed like it is still a "school night".
