I slept in a tiny cabin called the Doll House – just big enough for a single bed and two tiny dressers.
Waking up, I checked my watch on the bedside table and saw that it read 5:30am.
The silence and stillness was such that I could hear and feel the beating of my own heart.
No birds sang or stirred yet.
The lake was placid and seemed like a mirror of glass.
The usual early light didn’t greet me, just a haze that seemed reluctant to clear and reveal a blue morning sky.
I lay there in my bed and snuggled - not sure if I cared to swing my legs over the beds edge and disturb this moment – seemingly frozen in time.
Finally I did and peered out from the little cabin door onto the hushed lake.
I gasped as I saw a huge orange disc rising over the eastern skyline.
The light illuminated the mist and caused a fiery trail with its reflection on the water.
I stood transfixed in the moment – the past, present and future all melding into one.
The sight literally took my breath away!
I tip toed out and down to the landing still captivated by this fabulous display of light, mist and water.
A sense of awe and wonder held me captive for several minutes until the birds began stretching their wings and waking up.
A breeze picked up, insects started buzzing, the birds start their calling and chattering as squirrel and chipmunk begin their daily foraging.
The lake now is rippling rings of gold.
The moment has passed.
People nearby on the lake are stirring, making coffee and their sleepy voices can be heard over the water of the lake.
I faintly hear cars and tractors on the back roads as they trek to work or wherever they go.
Only the hummingbird and I remember what occurred just a few moments ago . . .
The same as ever, since the beginning – the dawn of time.
It made me realize that this morning, like every morning, is a new beginning – until the end of time.
