I just finished the Hernando de Soto family tree today. After doing a lot of research within PARES Ministerio de Cultura, Spain. I downloaded a lot of documents relative to this family and then began mapping out their family tree via those documents. The work is the result of the many errors I found within the historical accounts of Hernando de Soto. Lets start with the biggest error of them all. The one I found within Wikipedia. The article there lists his wife's name correctly on the first page. But when you click upon the link of her name it says, Ines de Bobadilla, sometimes,I sabel de Bobadilla. The birthdates given on Isabel and Hernando de Soto are estimates. As to the documentation within PARES, Ministry of Culture, all the documents I have found scream at me saying her name is definitly Isabel. Nit picking? I don't think so when the history that was written was supposed to be accurately. Then there's the tiff over where Hernando de Soto was born. The documents I found in the archives said, Jerez de la Frontera de los Caballeros. His family worked and traveled to various parts of the Frontera from Badajos to Jerez. But Hernando was definitely born in Jerez. Then as the old stories go about Hernando de Soto, they all say he came from middle class nobility. From what I have read in the documents, his ancestors had political pull with queens and kings. They fought against the Moors with exceptional distinction enough to get noticed by those kings and queens and rewarded. The family he had married into was also wealthy and it would stand to reason that they wouldn't allow their daughter, Isabel de Bobadilla marry into a "poor hidalgo family". Hernando de Soto's story is cut out quite clear when he distinguished himself in Cuzco Peru during its conquest. He held a governmental position in Nicaragua for a time and then moved on to becoming a Captain General and Governor of Cuba and Florida. His family, the de Soto immigrated to Florida, Mexico, Peru and even Isla Espanola - Santo Domingo and Isla de San Juan, Puerto Rico. We have been told time and time again that absolutely nothing is known about Hernando de Soto's family. Well, I found out via the documentation that his wife became the first and last woman to Govern Cuba. While he was away exploring Florida's frontier all the way up to Arakansas, he died there, she finished building the fortress he left unfinished in Cuba. I've supplied some of the links that will take you to the places where I saw the errors made. The point I am trying to make here is that genealogists should always depend upon their own research done on a specific person and the history that surrounds them. The next point I am also making is to never entirely believe what you have read in the history books about people. Do your own research first to find the contradictions within those stories. Then do the research that will disprove them. By the way, Hernando de Soto died from a severe fever in an Indian Village. So some of the errors will thrive and be passed on throughout time by others who encounter them on a daily basis.
