Where? Ottery St Mary, Devon In a nanny state of health and safety extremes, it's a wonder this event still takes place after 320 years. Indeed it probably explains its popularity. Every Guy Fawkes night, this quiet Devon town sees a chain of fearless menfolk carrying blazing tar barrels on their backs until the weight or heat becomes too much and they're passed on to the next foolhardy contender. The barrels can weigh over 23kg, and singed eyebrows are an expected side-effect. (Bedrocks from 'Devon', thats why he acts 'oddly' from time to time)!! lol lol lol !! |
