London on This Day . . .

On 29th December 1940 incendiaries dropped on the City of London caused over 1400 fires including six that were classed as conflagrations, one of which covered half a square mile.

The above picture is of St. Pauls Cathedral.

The Guildhall was damaged, only its walls stood, eight churches designed by Sir Christopher Wren were destroyed as was Paternoster Row, a major telephone exchange, the Central Telegraph Office and guild company halls.

Also damaged that night were five mainline stations, nine hospitals, sixteen Underground stations and St Paul's was hit by incendiaries.

. . . . Just one ‘day’s ‘bombing out of the entire ‘Blitz’. . . .

I have seen films shot during the horrific Blitz. I am always so proud of the British and Londoners for their steely resolve during that appalling time.

Once again, it was the 'Fire Fighters' and the 'Home Guard' who bore the brunt of the horrific fires which blazed - it was awful for them Brave men, is an understatement

All I know is what my mum told me and like you watching the movies. The documentary channel has been an absaloute 'eye opener' too. It has taught me a heck of a lot about the two world wars.

Jeri, I must apologize for addressing you as 'Jane' on my comment to you last night - as soon as I had clicked the 'post comment', I realized what I had done
I agree with him too

And it made Britons more resolute than ever to make the Nazis pay for their madness. WW II proved that bombing the hell out of people only makes them hate you more.

So true. I know wasn't born at that time, but the 'resolve' of the people (in all the cities of Britain) were determined not to let them win.
It must have been terrible for them - the London Underground stations were used as shelters
