Betelgeuse and 2012? Check With the Experts

by Nancy Atkinson on January 21, 2011

Betelgeuse

Betelgeuse, as seen by the Hubble Space Telescope.

We’ve heard there’s some news running amok that the star Betelgeuse in
the constellation Orion could explode in 2012. The simple answer is:
probably not, and even if it does, there won’t be “two suns” and we
won’t be in any danger. Let me just refer you to the experts:
Astronomer Phil Plait explains all on his Bad Astronomy site on Discover; additionally astronomer and 2012 doomsday debunker extraordinaire Ian O’Neill can clarify everything for you at his post on Discovery Space.

Don't Panic! Betelgeuse Won't Explode in 2012   Discovery - January 22, 2011
Betelgeuse is a dying star. It's reached the end of the line and
currently in the terminal throes of shedding vast bubbles of gas into
space. Betelgeuse is a red supergiant star and it's so massive that it
will detonate as a supernova. With all this drama happening 640
light-years away in the constellation of Orion, there's little wonder
that this tumultuous star is easy headline bait.

It has been debunked already. It could occur anytime in the next million years - the supernova.

Hoping the Hubble telescope catches the moment, whenever it happens.

End of the world rumors are BS. Pure and simple. The Mayans made their calendars too small and just ran out of space.

I saw that cartoon, very funny. According to my calculations since we had calendar changes, and lost a few years in the process, I think this is 2012 already , so????

Looks like everything is going to happen in 2012--'end of the world' or 'the end of the world as we know it'--a presidential election, my
