I couldn't disagree more with a couple points. The anti-McCain hysteria on the far right isn't ideological, it's personal. They account for only a few percent of the general election electorate; their sway within the primaries, which is where their messages would register loudest if at all, was negligible. McCain will win the GOP nomination without ever appealing to the ideologues in the party -- which is the antithesis of the norm. Usually candidates run on the extremes to get the nomination and then move back to the center for the general election. McCain's popularity among moderates and independents is *very* high. I think more of them will vote for McCain than for Obama. McCain will get many more independent/moderate votes in the general election than he'll lose from the extremists and haters.

As for Congress, its popularity is also at very low levels. Looking at the polls I've seen in some of the seats that are up for grabs, I don't see any consolidation or expansion of power for the Democrats.

With the Dems nominating an ideologue and the GOP nominating a moderate, I can see the GOP regaining both houses on McCain's coattails if they play their cards right. The electorate of the battleground states aren't looking for red or blue, they're looking for results and bipartisanship. McCain can make that case. I don't think Obama can advance his nebulous platitudes very far beyond the party base.

I just read a couple news accounts. It's certainly sad, but the kid had a hole in his heart and was on oxygen the entire flight. I've also seen some discrepancies in time spent in detainment waiting to be processed -- from 12-15 minutes (more plausible given arrival time to 911 call) to 30 minutes (their lawyer's account). An acquaintance of mine died after a 3.5 hour flight from deep vein thrombosis/pulmonary embolism, and he was in pretty good shape. How "preventable" was this death? I don't know but I can't get past the fact the baby wasn't in good condition and just got off a long flight. An autopsy may shed more light but I can't jump on ICE for this yet like some are. Regardless, there does appears to be a need for review and perhaps for expedited medical entry for critically ill arrivals. I am very sad for his family.

Yes, it's a waste. Do you think either party would exclude anyone within reach of AARP's clout and deny "starving old people" their own rebates while everyone else gets one? In an ELECTION year? No bleeping way. Too many votes to buy. It's a benefit of incumbency to spread wealth, no matter how shameful and outrageous. I'll save the economics and arguments for drastic tax reduction for some other time (my own blog) but I'm at least as cynical about this as you.

The only thing I'd give her $15 for is to go/stay away.

Can you add some kind of chat icon to the timestamp page? The only way we can see who's chatting on that page is if they're among the six most recent visitors, which actually works out to five plus yourself.
