I have a favorite pair of reading glasses, red, with very small lenses. I only need them to read so a lot of the time they are hooked onto the neck of my shirt. Most of the time when I reach for them, they are there, but once in awhile they fall off.
One time this summer I got home from the post office and they were missing, so I called over there and asked Bridgett the post office lady if she could look around and see if I'd left them there somewhere. She went outside and looked where I'd parked, and there they were in the gutter. It's possible at least one car had run over them, but she got there just in time to save them from a certain mashing by someone's SUV.
Yesterday I hung up a load of wet laundry on the clothesline, and then stuck a couple of sheets in the dryer. Then I missed my readers. I didn't think I'd dropped them at the post office this time, just figured they might be out by the clothesline. When the sheets were dry, I opened the dryer, and there they were on the ledge inside the door where the lint catcher is. They probably landed there while the drum was spinning. Good thing, because they could have gotten scratched up more than they already are.
After all these adventures, these readers are getting a little worse for wear so I looked for more like them at the store, and not only is that model not available, I don't like any of the others on offer. I'll have to take better care of these.
I suppose you were thinking this was going to be about books or libraries or the evils of television.
