Precious

Still reviewing movies here.

Have you seen Precious?

"Viciously abused by her mother (a riveting, Golden Globe-winning Mo'Nique) and pregnant by her father, Harlem teen Precious Jones (Gabourey Sidibe) has an unexpected chance at a different life when she enrolls in an alternative school. Teacher Blu Rain (Paula Patton) encourages her, but Precious must battle unimaginable barriers everywhere in her life. Lee Daniels directs his drama that features appearances by Mariah Carey and Lenny Kravitz." - Netflix

Precious is not an attractive person, she's huge fat, and doesn't look or act very bright. This pregnancy is her second child by her own father, the first child had Down Syndrome (Precious calls her 'Mongo' because someone had called the baby a Mongoloid Idiot like they did in the old days) and is being raised by Precious's grandmother because Precious's mother wants nothing to do with the babies except she claims to be raising them herself so she can get welfare money.

Going in, I had a rough idea what it was about, but that didn't prepare me for how moving I would find it. When it was over I wanted to have a good cry, the kind with lots of tissues and loud boo-hooing because life can be so tough and yet there are people who have hope and keep going.

It's life on the edge in the big city where it's hard to survive, much less get an education and make a living, and there is no love at home for Precious who is constantly told she is stupid, an animal, and wasting her time in school. There are places where the style is more documentary than play-acting, and the performance by the woman who played the mother was absolutely riveting. It came at the end of the movie, and that's what left me so moved.

I am looking forward to seeing it again sometime.
