Just had another movie marathon, a short one, so it was a half-marathon.
Up in the Air Starring George Clooney, if you watched the Academy Awards you saw some bits of this movie. It's about a man who flies all over the country firing people on behalf of their employers. He enjoys his lifestyle and all the perks from belonging to the frequent flyer clubs for airlines and rental cars and hotel chains. It's a funny/sad movie, because for one thing, it's about people getting laid off and that's no joke in our current economy. It's also about how he has finally found someone to whom he would like to commit. I recommend it.
Leap Year This is a girly movie like Jennifer Aniston used to star in, but she's getting a little bit long in the tooth for that kind of part, so the star is Amy Adams, the actress who starred in Julie and Julia, Doubt, and other movies. This one is about a young woman who thinks it's time her boyfriend proposed marriage, so she decides to invoke the old Irish custom where the woman can propose to the man on the 29th of February. It's one of those classic road trip movies and she bumbles around the Irish countryside, falling in love with an Irish guy, not her boyfriend. The scenery is beautiful, and the story is okay, but the scenery is really beautiful, and she's cute. I semi-recommend it, which means the $1 matinee or the long airplane flight.
Trailer Park Boys: Countdown to Liquor Day Not for the faint of heart. "Returning from their latest stint in jail, boozy pals Julian (John Paul Tremblay), Bubbles (Mike Smith) and Ricky (Robb Wells) plan to go legit once and for all -- only to find old nemesis Jim (John Dunsworth), the newly sober manager of their trailer park, preparing to demolish their homes. Now their white trash war might drive the boys back to crime and Jim back to the bottle. Mike Clattenburg directs this comedy based on the Canadian TV show." - Netflix. We think Trailer Park Boys are funny, but most people would probably think they are just dumb and trashy. Each to their own, we were glad this movie was available at the hotel.
The Young VictoriaThis is about when Queen Victoria became the queen and how she met and came to marry Prince Albert. It is interesting to see how various politically-minded individuals tried to manipulate the young queen. They were married 20 years before he died of typhoid at age 42, and they had 9 children. It's fun to see the costumes and palaces, especially since this is a somewhat later period of time than a lot of the period piece movies that are out there. If you like historical movies, this is as good as any.
Sherlock Holmes This is an action movie, very much along the lines of Wild, Wild West. It's pretty good if you like action movies and can tolerate a lot of CGI. He's not A. Conan Doyle's Sherlock, this one fights in slow-motion, fights a lot, as a matter of fact, and Dr. Watson is a lot scrappier than he comes off in the books. I recommend it to the action movie lovers.
Did You Hear About the Morgans? "After witnessing a murder, high-powered -- and estranged -- wife Meryl (Sarah Jessica Parker) and husband Paul (Hugh Grant) Morgan must say good-bye to sophisticated Manhattan when they enter the witness protection program together and land in Wyoming. At odds, they attempt to adjust to small-town life in this charming comedy that also stars Sam Elliott, Mary Steenburgen and Elisabeth Moss." - Netflix. Elisabeth Moss is that nerdy secretary/woman on the way up from Madmen, so it's fun to see her in a contemporary role.
If 'charming comedy' means cliche country-city and estranged married couple jokes then this is charming. I don't like either one of the leading actors, they are both irritating. There is some nice scenery that is supposed to be Wyoming, but could be New Mexico, anyhow it's nice western scenery. I suspect it was not Wyoming because the wind was not blowing all the time.
Wilferd Brimley also has a role. I just hate that man, based on those TV ads he's got and past movie roles, and the oatmeal ads. When I saw his name in the opening credits I was hoping he played the part of a corpse so I wouldn't have to listen to him. He wasn't as bad as I'd expected, but I don't think he was acting, he was just being himself. I don't recommend that you pay good money to see this movie. If you go to someone's house and they've rented this DVD, be sure to load up on booze and snacks to get through it.
The weather here in Las Vegas is just about perfect, and thousands of college kids on spring break have descended on the town to take advantage of it. Thousands. Really.
