At a Loss

I want to write something, but am struggling.

It seems like our MyBloggers is on a greased slide to death, with many of our friends bailing out for more populous social sites. Associated Content, where Jim Hetrick (Hayduke) now blogs pays for some of the posts, which no doubt attracts plenty of new users on a continuing basis.

And then our friend Steve (looserobes) decided to leave us for good, removing his presence from MyBloggers entirely. I suppose if he is running for a judge-ship, he wants to get his previous articles off the Internet in case they might be used against him.

Now we are going to see less of Jondude as he has gotten too busy with his painting and volunteer activities.

I won't even try to remember all the friends who have drifted away in favor of Facebook and Twitter, sites that I have yet to want to spend any time on.

A friend of mine recently expressed a desire to read my MyBloggers blogs, but had trouble getting to the site, did not receive my invite to join MyBloggers, and probably couldn't find me once she got here, despite my best efforts. One time I got a local friend to sign up, but after a couple of posts she moved on, not attracted to our little backwater on the info highway.

The MyBloggers software has been broken for a couple of years, so any attempt to change my user settings results in error messages. Sometimes the changes are successful despite the messages, but there are other functions that don't work at all, such as changing the design of the banner.

In the past Eddie has told us that the MyBloggers site is running at a loss: he's keeping it going out of the goodness of his heart. Those of us who started out on Blogster can remember how painful it was when Blogster changed its look and feel with all the technical problems, and I don't how to explain why that site has attracted and kept such an odd bunch of contentious folks who fight, argue, feud, tattle, rant, belittle, insult, and rave not only among themselves but at any other poor fool who ventures an opinion there.

And there was a reason why Eddie set it up so that new users had to be invited: a means of keeping out spammers and time wasters who sign up for anything they come across and then disappear. Evidence of this is that April 11, 2009 message on Jeri's (elderjane) general comment section:
"hello,im indonesian
let me be ur friend"

If we start getting a bunch of crap like that, I'm outta here for sure, so it's a matter of being careful what we wish for.

I sincerely hope MyBloggers somehow survives, that we get an influx of new interesting people. I feel a personal responsibility to do my part by trying to post interesting content that people look forward to reading. Which is why I'm sitting here at a loss for words.
