Indian Summer

After the first frost in September it often warms back up and we have our Indian Summer. If we are lucky, the frost isn't a killing one, so summer is with us for a while longer. My tomato plant survived our recent light snow, but the zucchini leaves have wilted.

We had several gloomy, rainy days last week, but the last couple of days have been some of the warmest we've had all summer, edging up past 75 degrees in the day time, with warm light breezes, not even that crispness to the air that tells us winter is coming again this year.

The hummingbirds are all officially gone: I haven't seen a single one at the feeder for three days now. I will leave it out for a few more days in case there is a late-commuter passing through, but if they are to make it to where they're headed for the winter, they should all be gone by now.

The beaver got up into the yard further than before and took down another aspen tree. I got out there and put some more chicken wire around the remaining aspens. Just when we think we've got it all covered, Bucky strays further afield than we expected.

I have one more group coming to stay in the guest cabin in October and then I can close it up for the winter. A woman who has stayed here several times before called Saturday and wanted to rent the smaller cabin. I told her I had shut off the water over there, but I would rent her the bigger cabin for the small cabin price, but for some reason she wasn't interested in that. Since that smaller cabin is out of sight of our house, it makes me wonder if they have some ulterior motive for wanting to be out of sight like that.

Are you watching the new Ken Burns film about National Parks? I enjoy the photography as much as anything. He still looks like a kid, but an aging kid. I don't know if a polka dotted tie goes with a striped shirt, but he's an artist, so it doesn't matter.
