Home Handyman

The other day I heard a sound of running water that wasn't right and the pan under the kitchen sink was overflowing. We'd been having trouble with the drain pipe ever since Mr. Troutbend installed the new sink last year, but he never did anything radical to fix it, just tightened something and said 'that shouldn't happen' and went outside to read library books. I didn't push the issue because I don't want to discourage him from taking on future projects.

But this time, he was at bowling and the dishwasher was running. I quick emptied the dishpan (outside after almost pouring it down the kitchen drain in my flustered-ness) and decided rather than stop the cycle, I would just hold the pipes together until it was done. It was on the first rinse cycle and I figured that would last about 10 minutes. Wrong. The first rinse is 20 minutes and there is a second 20 minute rinse cycle, and this was the short cycle! I had plenty of time to contemplate the condition of the grout on the kitchen floor, what is under the sink, and chat with Buddy the Friendly Cat who strolled in to see what was going on, then strolled out when it didn't involve cat food.

So then, no getting around it, Mr. Troutbend had to fix it and actually went to the store and got parts. I still don't trust it and look under there every so often, where the dry dishpan seems to mock me as if to say 'what are you lookin' at?'
