Remember that old phrase What's good for the goose is good for the gander?
There is yet another controversy regarding legalized prostitution brewing around the state of Nevada.
This time it is about one of the brothels announcing that they are going to hire a couple of male prostitutes to attract female customers. This has brought world-wide attention, according to the article I read, so maybe you've heard about it.
This isn't the first time it's been proposed, and nobody thinks it'll succeed, but they are fretting about it might cause the legislature to ban all prostitution.
The reason it supposedly won't succeed is that women are perceived as requiring more time than men to think they got value for their money so it would be hard for the male prostitutes to make enough money because they would have fewer customers in a work shift. "Women won't come in for a quickie. They're not jackrabbits like men are,"
"Davis can't even get an encouraging word out of former Hollywood madam Heidi Fleiss, who moved to Pahrump four years ago with her own grand plans for a spalike "stud farm" catering to women.
"It's not going to work," Fleiss said of the Shady Lady's plan. "Why would you drive out there (150 miles) when you can go on craigslist? You have to drive forever. No woman wants to get laid that bad."
The reason it might succeed, according to a sociology professor, is that women with money might become regular customers and appreciate the safety of a controlled environment.
At first I thought the reason people fear this would lead to the banning of all prostitution in Nevada (assuming it is a valid concern, but I doubt it) is because men don't like the idea that maybe women might cheat on their husbands and single women wouldn't need to sleep with whatever they could get, and guys couldn't go on ego trips rejecting women they considered unattractive.
I can hear them saying legal prostitution was okay before, when it benefitted men, but now it's just wrong. It's playground thinking, where the guys had fun with their ball game, but if someone is going to let in women, then it's not fun any more, there goes the neighborhood.
But underneath it all is homophobia. Because once there starts to be legal male prostitutes, men just can't stand the idea that men might eventually be able to legally pay for sex with other men.
"Some predict the introduction of male prostitutes will inevitably lead to brothels catering largely to gay men, an idea Flint said "unnerves people" in a way more traditional cathouses do not."
The article acknowledges that there currently are same-sex paid sessions in the brothels between women, but paid men for men is something else.
Even if the men in power who run the legislature might tee-hee and say the male prostitute-women customers idea 'won't succeed, so let 'em try' I don't think they will put up with legalized men-to-men paid sex for a moment, so will try to nip any change from the traditional mix in the bud. So far the health regulations are gender-neutral, so we'll have to wait and see if that changes.
