Desert Scenery & the Earthquake

Here is a photo of the Goosenecks of the San Juan River before it goes into Lake Powell and eventually the Grand Canyon.

Another pretty sight in that area is Monument Valley:

I like those wide-open spaces where the sky is big and the roads are straight.

We're headed for Colorado in a few weeks, and I'm thinking we should take that route, just to get back in touch with that scenery and visit some relatives.

We were staying in a high-rise hotel on the Las Vegas Strip when the recent Mexican earthquake hit. I was in the room alone, and felt a distinct swaying of the room. Without someone to ask if they were noticing the same thing, I was asking myself if maybe it was a huge wind gust on a windy day. It is a brand-new building, and it creaked a little bit, but I was only on the 8th floor, so that'd be unusual to get that amount of sway. I could see the cord on my camera moving back and forth, and didn't think it was in the breeze. And then I saw the TV news about the earthquake. What a thrill to have experienced it.
