From the Las Vegas Review-Journal:
YOU MIGHT HAVE MISSED THIS AD WHILE PERUSING THE CLASSIFIEDS. It's the casting call for last week's bikini parade on The Strip marking the start of summer: "We are looking for models 21 and over for a historic event in Las Vegas NV. Must be able to walk from the Fashion Show mall down to the Wynn Hotel and Casino in a bikini then walk back to the mall and pose for a picture. This event will be in the Guinness Book of World Records. So that means you must be bikini ready."
While the Guinness judge said the event needed at least 250 participants in different bikinis, he didn't mention looking good in a two-piece.
BY THE NUMBERS:
281
The number of bikini wearing women who paraded down The Strip in a record-setting event.
Not much of a walk - just to the corner, cross the street via overhead pedestrian walkway, and walk back. The big day was May 14, official "Summer in Paradise Day" in Las Vegas, and started with showgirls and flamboyant Mayor Oscar Goodman at the Welcome to Las Vegas sign. Oscar doesn't do anything in public without showgirls.
I can't embed the video here, but you can watch it if you go to:
Bikini Parade Video
Here is a description: all the bikini women, the mayor, and the showgirls were assembled at the Welcome to Las Vegas sign that is in the middle of the street on the south Strip. Oscar read the pronouncement and then there was a bikini fashion show with models strutting on a glass catwalk there in the middle of the street. The reason for the glass was apparently so the camera man could film them from below.
Then, most of the bikini women piled into a tour bus, and a couple of the showgirls along with the hostess (Holly Madison, who I think I recognize from that TV show Beauty and the Geek) rode in a 1950s vintage pink Elvis Cadillac convertible to the other end of the Strip where the Fashion Show Mall is.
At one point the women had to cross the street on a cross-walk, so there were police cars blocking the traffic and cars all lined up behind that barricade.
Next we see the women taking the escalator up to the pedestrian walkway, and all the spectators lined up watching them go by, taking pictures like crazy. I didn't see anyone who didn't look good in their bikini, but maybe those folks were edited out. Some of the women were carrying purses (not beach bags like a model might for the fashion show), and I decided they might be civilians who decided to be in the parade.
At the end it was declared that the new Guinness Record for largest bikini parade was set that day, and now we're all happy.
