Here are some pictures of the aftermath of the July 1976 flood where I live in Colorado. 284 people were killed or missing, but a couple of years ago a man turned up in Oklahoma who had been reported dead all these years. His family was staying in Estes Park and the day of the flood decided to return home without checking out of the motel. For 32 years was never aware that there had been a big flood or that anyone would be looking for him.

Survivors who were there that night spoke of crouching on the side of the hill watching the swollen river carrying propane tanks and cars full of people with the headlights still lit to a certain death while horizontal lightning crashed overhead and the rain poured down.

The magnitude of the devastation was so great there was talk of not rebuilding the main highway that goes past my house. Many summer homes and houses were destroyed and people lost their land.

We still talk about 'the flood' and describe events as 'before' and 'after the flood.' I can imagine the hurricane victims in Louisiana and Mississippi are the same, some of the scars will never heal.
