He's gone as of last night. If I tried to describe what he meant to me, how much he loved laughter, how good of a man he was, I would fall short. I'm already falling short. He was my favorite from the time I was small. I spent countless spring breaks at his house with my aunt and my cousin. Even now, I think about him and I smile. He had a way of making you laugh with his crazy humor. He told me a story that was priceless and I know it will lose something through this blog but I'll tell it anyway.
Years ago, he and my aunt had a great goofy mutt named Burt. NOw as Burt aged, he had to go to the vet for medications and the such. The pharmacist and my uncle were great buddies and my uncle was always giving him a hard time -- joking, you know and they'd always laugh. Well, my uncle went in one day with his prescription for his furkid, Burt. After the pharmacist filled it, he called out as he would usually, "K-9 Jones."(false last name of course). He waited, my uncle sat there knowing full well it was him and didn't say a word. The pharmacist called out again, "K-9 Jones?" No answer. Still my uncle waited. Finally in exasperation the pharmacist called out this time really loudly, "K-9 Jones!" Suddenly, as if it dawned on him that it was for him, my uncle jumped up in front a full waiting group of people and looked at the pharmacist with disbelief and annoyance. He grabbed the prescription out of the pharmacist's hand and said loudly, "That's my wife, Kaneen!" He took it and stomped out of the waiting area.
Well, the pharmacist knew my uncle and started cracking up but the people in the waiting area were aghast and my uncle was laughing his head off having the time of his life.
That's the kind of sunshine my uncle spread. That's the man he was. That's the person I will miss. A little sunshine has gone out in the world. I'll miss you!
