Spring Readiness

Getting ready for spring in Florida entails many things, most of them minor because spring is only here for about two weeks or 3 if we stretch it and then we have heat, heat and more heat. Actually I'm sort of immune to the heat, and have found the 80 is "nice" 90 is "a little warm" and only call it actually "hot" when we approach the 100 mark. Those days are also limited. As a transplanted Floridian, but as one who has traveled down to Florida over the years from various places my preacher father would be planted, the other Florida folks and I know when to go in to the A/C.

Afternoons are "stay inside" times and you only submit yourself to the steady intense sun when you have to. We look at the vacationing northerners, Europeans, and Mid west-westerners as "not the brightest lights" for being out in the sun in mid-afternoon. No true Floridian does that intentionally. Actually we pick up sun just by walking around daily. I'm already tanning and I don't lay out. Now those Hispanics from South America -- the vacationers -- they know what they are doing. They understand the concept of "siesta" even though that is largely Mexican. They also can take the heat. Seldom (but sometimes) do you seem them sweating in line at one of the water parks in mid-afternoon during the heat. They know.

Then there are the Europeans who come to Florida to "get a tan" -- they use sunscreen, but since their white skin has never really been exposed to tropical and sub-tropical climates of course they burn. I've seen some melanoma's in the making watching some pasty British tourists bravely walking around Wet N Wild in their swimsuits. (usually they are from Great Britain and all it's Empire. Unfortunately this is true and I've witnessed it in person many times.) They look more like lobsters that are ...about done.

All this makes me think....time for a new summer disposable wardrobe. As many colored pairs of capris as possible, multiple t-shirts and every color of sandal and flip-flop you can buy. (This is not waste it is necessity because you wear them every day) Usually this is a Walmart purchase and since I paid so little for them, who cares if they wear out by September. I'm thinking I don't have a purple pair, got to check into that. Have a great day.
