I remember exactly that day. I was in my classroom when I got the call. My English 4 students watched in disbelief as the first plane flew into the Tower. All I could think of was how many times I'd been in the World Trade Center. I use to take the PATH train to New Jersey to work when I was doing regional theatre. One time when I was working in publishing I actually worked in Tower #1 way up on the 70th floor. It was a windy day, and I'm sitting there copy-editing when all of a sudden I notice that we seem to be swaying. I looked out the window and sure enough, we were moving. I asked one of the people who worked there. She said that the buildings were built to do that in bad weather. It was the last time I was "up" in the Towers.
The skyline of Manhattan will never be the same. I remember taking off from LaGuardia at night over the twinkling lights of the Twin Towers and the little excitement that sparked in me every time we flew in over them. They seemed so close you could have touched them. I miss them. My heart still aches for the people. I saw today how sad they still are even 10 years after the act of terrorism.
We can never ever forget what was done to us on American soil. We can never forget those who gave their lives trying to save the trapped and injured. We can never forget the innocent people who lost their lives for no reason We can never forget the tragedy that was 9/ll/01. Rest in peace.
