Two of my extended family members have encountered this awful disease. One of them early in her life, she succumbed after a long and hard struggle and a bone marrow transplant gone wrong. The other suffers now.
It's amazing how this horrible malignancy spreads so quickly. One day you have no idea that you are ill, then you get some small indicator. Thinking that it is nothing you go to the doctor who suddenly announces that he is "concerned" or "wants to look further." Then you begin the battery of tests to determine what it is.
They look and look. You are stuck with IV's and needles, put on display, taken pictures of and flipped in the frying pan, till you are tired and sore -- only to find out that it is much worse that you thought. The cancer doesn't stay put. It moves almost gleefully through your body, eating up the good tissue and killing you every step of the way.
It is an ugly disease. There is no easy time with this pariah, no easy way to get through it.
We on the outside can only watch and pray and cry. We worry and get exhausted. We cannot feel what you are feeling, but our hearts are with you constantly through the battle. All the time inside we wonder if we would put up such a heroic fight. We don't know your pain, but we empathize with you as you live through this nightmare. Nothing pretty about it.
This is a disease that should be cured! That's why I support Relay for Life and any other form of cancer research. This is an awful horrible disease that must be wiped out.
Hopefully for this family member, the end will come soon and it will be peaceful. Funny, I thought Monday's were my worst days, now I guess it is Monday and Tuesday.
