News from Soonerland ... .

Before I get to the depressing news...here's some good news!  My Sooner women's basketball team is in the Sweet Sixteen.  The job Coach Coale has done with this team is just amazing.  They lost the All-American Paris twins to graduation; then they lost their superstar outside shooter, Whitney Hand , who was the Big 12 Freshman of the Year last year, to an ACL injury.
Somehow, she motivated the rest of the team to elevate their game; now, here they are in the Sweet Sixteen.  Even more impressive is the fact that of the fourteen years she has coached at OU, there have only been four semesters when her team did not have an overall grade point of 3.0 or better.
I don't have a lot of time.  I have to get ready in just a bit to go with Jim for his initial visit to the oncologist.  According to the doctor who has been treating him, this physician will probably refer him to an oncologist at OU Health Sciences Center, since he has no insurance.
The OU Health Science Center is the teaching hospital for OU medical students; and they will treat patients free so long as the students are allowed to observe and learn from the teaching physician.
I actually have met this doctor we will be seeing today.  She is in the same practice as my oncologist.  I met her once when she was covering for my doctor on a weekend during one of my hospitalizations during chemotherapy.
That was nine years ago, so I doubt she will remember me.
I went to visit Mom last evening.  I can just see her going downhill ever time I visit.  She cannot use her right hand or arm, as it was permanently paralyzed when she had her car accident, some forty-five years ago; unfortunately, now she has developed a shake in her left hand.  I may have to start going up to feed her if it gets much worse.
I am going to talk to the staff to see if there is anything they can give her to help the palsey.  I don't know if she is developing Parkinson's or what. I tried to engage her in conversation by telling her all about Holly's trip to New Zealand, but she hardly responded.
Usually any news about Holly perks her right up,  but last night she just didn't seem that interested in anything I said.  She was alert; she just seemed really withdrawn.  I think she is giving up.
Jim and I have decided that we will not tell her about his lung cancer unless we absolutely have to.  We both agreed that it would just trigger too many bad memories of when Larry died.
This is not going to be a good year.  I see too many things looming on the horizon.  Jim's cancer is small cell carcinoma, which spreads rapidly. It's the same type Larry had, so, at best, about all the doctors will be able to do is give him palliative care.
He has been quite philosophical about it.  He says he has had a good life, and he's ready to accept whatever lies ahead.  I don't know if that attitude will hold, but I hope it will.
I truly wish Mom would go before Jim.  Losing one child is bad enough; and Mother was much stronger when Larry passed away.  I don't think she would even be well enough to attend Jim's funeral.
Well, I guess that's enough doom and gloom for one post.  On to a  little better news, although I'm not sure Holly would agree.  She has to return to New Zealand in May; the first trip was fun; however, I don't know if she is quite so excited about this one.
However, in June, the whole family is going to Disney World for ten days, so that will be exciting.  They went last year but didn't feel they saw anywhere nearly everything, so they wanted to go back.
Then, in July, she has to fly to Ft. Lauderdale to speak at a conference on government compliance.  She and Bevan are thinking of making that "an adults only" trip, so that may be an opportunity for me to get to spend some time with the girls while they are gone.
I have some news about Kenna also but will have to save it for the next post.
Time to take a shower and begin getting dressed.
Later,

Joan
