One of the more intriguing aspects of chemo is that it changes one's hair--often the color, the texture, and the thickness.
My oncologist told me to expect my hair to come back in curly, as this is the case with almost all people who have naturally straight hair.
Believe me, it did! Now, this phenomena wears off, usually somewhere between six months and a year; then one's hair reverts back to its normal state. However, mine stayed curly for almost two years.
That was an adventure! Every morning was a surprise. I never knew which way it was going to curl. I just had to go with the flow and do what I could with it. I mentioned this to one of my aunts who had naturally curly hair.
"Now, you know why I started getting perms," she said.
My mother just loved it. One day she noticed that it was no longer curly.
"What happened to your curls?" she asked. "They went away. My oncologist told me they would," I replied.
"Oh, I was hoping it would stay that way," she answered in a disappointed tone. "I thought it was so pretty when it was curly."
My hair also came back in thicker. It has remained thicker, which I like. I read a post from one woman who had brown hair. Hers came back in flaming red. Mine came in salt and pepper and was really beautiful for a while; then the white began to dull. I eventually began coloring it back to a light brown.
August is a milestone month for me. It is the month that I was diagnosed with cancer. In just a few days, I will pass my 9th year cancer free.
