A Brave New World

The
people who keep crying "pork", "pork", "pork" of President Obama's
economic stimulus plan demonstrate a lack of understanding of what the
President wants the  plan to do for the United States.

They focus on the short-term without ever looking at the long term needs.

It's
the other half that people don't "get".  The second part of the
stimulus package focuses on not only helping the economy to recover but
also on restructuring  an economy relevant to the 21st Century.

It
earmarks money to advance alternative fuel options, to address climate
issues, to control health cost, to restructure government agencies,
etc.   Obama is gambling that we can rebuild a NEW economy--not just
put a band-aid on the current economy.

That involves not just putting money into our immediate concerns but
also providing money to create new programs and correct problems with
the old ones.

Our
economy today no longer works.  It is rife with problems that keep our
fuel prices on a roller coaster controlled by the whims of OPEC;  an
automobile industry about to collapse;  an environment in crises;  a
banking system run amok,  a health care system out of control,  a fight
against global enemies that takes one step forward and two steps back.

It
took decades to reach this crisis and it will not be corrected
overnight.  The American people must demonstrate patience as the
President works to bring us a new tomorrow with a new economy plus a
rebuilt image with our allies and our enemies.

However,
it takes money to solve these problems.  It seems to me that less than
a billion dollars is a small price to pay to guarantee our children and
grandchildren a prosperous and happy future in a brave new world that
is no longer dependent on the Middle East for fuel,  is no longer
worried about pollution and global warning,  an economy where people no
longer must worry about exorbitant interest rates .  Most importantly,
we must find a way to live in peace with those who advance a different
political or religious agenda than ours.  Obama already is exploring
our options in that area as well.

Those
who "cry" that we should let the chips fall where they may and that
scream we should NEVER negotiate with our foes do not grasp that this
economy  and that attitude WILL NOT SERVE us in the 21st Century.  WE
are NOT the world we were in the 50's and 60's.

What "worked" then is not relevant to today's society, completely
removed from the isolated society of yesteryear.  We are a global
community now;  our problems are the problems of the world.

Keep faith with this man.  He has a vision for a better tomorrow for us all.  Help him achieve it.
