More and more conservative--that's right--conservative--newspapers and columnists continue to suggest that Sarah Palin drop off the ticket. That includes my hometown paper, The Oklahoman, one of the most conservative newspapers in the nation. If they have ever supported a Democratic candidate, it hasn't been in my lifetime. In a Sunday editorial comment, one of the writers for The Oklahoman stated plainly that for the "good of the ticket" Palin should excuse herself.
Their concern? That Palin is a lightweight who is not experienced enough to handle the Presidency should Grandpa McCain croak, a very real possibility given his dibilitating injuries as a POW, his past history of melanomas, and his age.
Their very serious issues with Palin surfaced following an interview over the weekend with CBS anchor Katie Couric. Among other matters, she defended her lack of foreign policy experience by stating that she is governor of Alaska and that Alaska is just some sixty miles away from Russia. I haven't figured out what this has to do with anything unless the ubiquitous Governor McCain is expecting an attack by the Russians on Alaska I doubt she has even met personally with any Russians, aside possibly for some fisherman.
I personally am inclined to think that Putin and his pals would probably go after bigger game than the bears in Alaska; but, hey, I've been wrong before. Maybe Sarah knows something I don't. Of course, we do have an air force base in Alaska just in case Putin decides to row across for a heart-to-heart. I suspect the boys in blue would be up close and personal with Mr. Putin long before the governor got her crack at him.
Then there was the faux paus of the evening when Katie asked if Palin could give any examples other than his admonition two years ago to Fannie and Freddie during McCain's 26-year run in the Senate when he had ever spoken in favor of tighter regulations.
When Palin kept repeating the Fannie-Freddie example while Katie pressed for addtional examples, Palin finally admitted, "I'll find out and I'll let you know."
Watch this hilarious 30 second clip from Saturday Night Live spoofing Palin's fumbling and stumbling through that question.
