waiting for the moon

this is one of those cool spring nights
the kind you dream about
in mid-summer's humid dark heat
wishing it would wash over you anew


tonight
my regal neighbors the tall pines
are dressed in twilight blue-black
towering into the sapphire sky


we are all waiting
for the May moon
not full anymore
but almost
coming soon
rising
soon
like a saucer of liquid pearls


the day is already asleep
a blanket of frost is coming
for the just mowed grass
exhausted from hosting
constant gaggles
of worm-digging robins
with endlessly chirping babies to feed


the birds and their babies
live in the pines too
we are all neighbors
savoring the blessed quiet
embraced in twilight tonight
waiting for the moon
