Warming Spirits

From the December 1979 Gourmet Magazine, here is a hot drink recipe. Back in those days we didn't have all the exotic alcohols to choose from.

Hot Scotch Toddy
3/4 cup water
1 1/2 tablespoons sugar
1 slice lemon stuck with 2 cloves
3 inch cinnamon stick
1 jigger (1 1/2 oz) Scotch

Combine the water, sugar, lemon and cinnamon in a saucepan and bring to a boil over moderately high heat, stirring to melt the sugar. Add the Scotch and pour the toddy into a warmed mug. Makes 1 drink.

This hot buttered rum mix makes a nice Christmas gift packed in holiday mugs. It keeps a long time in the refrigerator.

2 cups (1 1/2 pounds) firmly packed brown sugar
1/2 cup butter or margarine at room temperature
1 tablespoon honey
1 1/2 teaspoon each:
vanilla extract
rum extract
brandy extract
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
1/4 teaspoon ground allspice
1/8 teaspoon grated nutmeg

Combine all ingredients and beat with a mixer until smooth.

To serve: put 1 teaspoon mix into 6 to 8 ounces of hot apple cider (or juice) or orange juice, hot milk, coffee, or hot water with rum.

Re: change of subject: I don't buy cable TV so have not seen the Hoarders show, so can't help you locate that thrift store. There are a couple really nice ones here. I've been checking them out as my moving/downsizing plans expand. I think I may been delivering some items to them in due time....

It was somewhere around Kokomo, Indiana, so I'm safe from temptation.

I love the hot buttered rum mix and am going to try it when it gets cold.

It keeps forever in your fridge and is so nice for a quick hot run drink.

I'm going to try the Scotch one tonight. Change of subject: I'm watching Hoarders and wondering where that nice-looking thrift store is. Not that I am in acquisition mode these days.
