It's a Steamer Juicer

I decided to retrieve the mystery pot from the trash and take pictures of it and found out about it on the Internet.

It is a steamer juicer and new stainless steel ones are for sale for about $180. This one is aluminum, but it seems to have all the required components.

The whole berries are put into the top, water goes into the bottom, and the juice goes into the middle part and gets drained off via the tube, which has clamps to keep one end on the pot, and pinch off the other end.

Bottom:

It wouldn't work on a flat glass stovetop because the heat would get trapped by the ridges and damage the cooktop.

Top, where the fruit goes:

Middle - the steam comes through the holes, and the hose on the side decants the juice.

So I guess I'd better keep it for awhile until I find someone who wants it, or because my wild chokecherries are especially luscious this year, maybe I'll make some juice with it, and work up to jelly. Here is the recipe over at Kitchentales: Chokecherry Jelly Recipe

Fill the bottom with water, put some sort of fruit or berries in the top, clamp off the hose (or put a pot under the end of the hose), and the middle pan will collect the yummy juice. Don't let it boil dry, and empty and wash it before the fruit dries or you will regret it! Works especially well with apples - after juicing, run the apple pulp through a fruit strainer (such as a Victorio strainer) to get applesauce.

The one I have is very similar. I paid about $30 for it off ebay. They are pretty rare these days, so make sure it goes to a good home if you don't keep it!

Okay, will do. I've never heard of them, and will have to think of something to cook in it just to see how it works.

I have an electric juicer and it is too much trouble to clean up. I think I
left it when we moved.

Gary used his (free) electric juicer for about a year because he thought the juice would lower his cholesterol. It was so much trouble to clean the stuff off those screens I was impressed at his dedication. But when he started taking a cholesterol-lowering drug, he wasn't so motivated so stopped using it. It is gathering dust on the countertop in Las Vegas and maybe this winter I'll find a cupboard big enough to hold it. I'm glad we didn't pay good money for it.

Ooooo, now I hope you will try it with a batch of chokeberries. Maybe it would work on an outdoor grill if you can't use it on your stovetop....

I still have coil elements on my stove, and when I replace it, I will probably not get a glass stove top because I don't want to have to worry about the wrong pans or too long cooking damaging it. Of course all the fancy features come with the glass top stoves, but that's okay as long as the self-cleaning oven works. I was this close to a new stove and then we decided to put new tires on the car.
